GeForce 8500GT on Ubuntu 7.04

I replaced my ATi X550 to GeForce 8500GT with 512MB RAM today. ATi open source driver cannot run OpenGL 3D games properly but it can run beryl smoothly.

The drivers for nVidia of Ubuntu cannot be worked. It is required to download the nVidia official driver. The latest version by this writing is 100.14.09.

Download the driver from nVidia.com. The following is the steps for installation.

Step 1 :
Press “Ctrl”+”Alt”+”F2” and then issue the following command :

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Step 2 :
Install the compiler and related libraries :

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Step 3 :
Let’s install the driver :

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg1.run

And follow the instructions on the screen.

Step 4 :
Reboot.

Remarks :
You should repeat the captioned steps except Step 2 after updating the kernel or xserver-xorg.

Forgot to tell you that you can uninstall the driver by issuing :

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg1.run –uninstall

Enjoy!
